The FDA recently issued a press release warning the public about the risks of Gianvi and other birth control drugs that contain drospirenone. Gianvi has been linked to blood clots, strokes, pulmonary embolisms and even death. The Defective Drug Lawyers at Schmidt & Clark, LLP are now investigating lawsuits on behalf of individuals injured by Gianvi side effects.
Gianvi Blood Clot Update 12/9/11: An independent advisory panel to the FDA has recommended that all birth control products containing the hormone drospirenone should have their labels updated to include a warning about blood clots. The panel’s recommendation was based on new data suggesting that the popular contraceptives may put women at a higher risk for dangerous blood clots than older forms of birth control. Manufactured and marketed by Teva Pharmaceuticals, Gianvi is a generic form of the contraceptive Yaz that is typically prescribed for birth control purposes. However, it is also commonly used ‘off-label’ to treat acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Gianvi prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, as well as by altering the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. These changes are designed to create an environment unsuitable for reproduction. Unfortunately, Gianvi contains a hormone known as drospirenone, which has been increasingly linked to a variety of life-threatening side effects.
